Each week, we issue a writing prompt to our own staff, guest contributors, and readers like you. We welcome guest submissions, so if you’re interested in being featured or regularly contributing to the site, email your responses to kelaine.conochan [at] thepromptmag.com.

The fairy tale started with a “Once upon a time,” and it ended the same way they all do. But for a while there—in that middle section—it got dicey a few times. I mean, we weren’t sure whether the princess would end up with the prince, whether the hero would slay the dragon, whether the kingdom would ever be the same.

And then lo and behold, the writer commanded peace and prosperity in perpetuity. An unfair, lazy shortcut, if you ask us. But then again, maybe we’re being too cynical. Maybe we’re stuck in that middle section and can’t find the pathway to salvation. Maybe we still have so much writing to do before we get to those three fateful words.

Will you join us in writing them?
