Subject: The Memo
Hi Roberta:
First off, thanks for all the help with the onboarding documents last week. Really excited to be here at IG! Hoping you can help me with something real quick.
Last Friday, I came to work in a suit per my understanding of company dress code. In our team meeting that morning, everyone was wearing branded IG polos and jeans except for me. Mike started the meeting by making a joke about me “not getting The Memo” which was pretty funny because he was exactly right!
I know I’m new, which is probably why I was left off the distro. If you could make sure my contact’s added to the roster for the next time The Memo goes out, I’d really appreciate it. Like I said in my interview—I’m a team player, so I don’t want to miss out on anything (even as little as Casual Friday!)
Thanks!

Hi, Roberta. Funny running into you at Potbelly last week!
I know you re-sent me the IG employee handbook PDF in response to my last email, but just wanted to remind you about adding me to the distro for The Memo—sounds like it went out again, but I can’t find it in my inbox or spam.
As you know, yesterday was Amanda’s birthday. I had no clue she had Celiac disease, so the cookies I brought weren’t exactly a great idea. She was super cool about it but did say “Sorry you didn’t get The Memo!” which is I guess where the reminder about her dietary issues were?
If you could confirm you’ve added me this time, that would be great. Really enjoying being part of the IG team and want to avoid any more little faux pas like this in the future.
Thanks!

Subject: Reminder re: The Memo – PLEASE ADVISE
Hi Roberta:
I have to say, I was a little confused to not receive a reply to my email from last week.
Today, everyone on my team went to get Chinese food as a group, and I’d already eaten the lunch I brought from home. I know this may seem like a small thing, but it was very awkward for me to have to choose between 1) going and eating again, 2) going and not eating, and 3) not going and being the odd man out.
Apparently, this Chinese lunch is something everyone up on 7 does the last Tuesday of every month, and even though Mike didn’t seem too bothered by me not knowing, he did (ONCE AGAIN) mention that I “didn’t get The Memo!”
This is the third time The Memo has been brought up in a situation where I’ve ended up looking like “the weird guy” on the team, which is not what I want!!!
In order for me to fully get involved in IG culture, I really need to be getting The Memo. Please advise.

Roberta:
Just letting you know, I mentioned my status re: The Memo with my team leader in passing this morning. Basically, I apologized for not getting it and told him I followed up with you, because I didn’t want to miss any more of them.
John seemed pretty confused when I brought it up (and a little flustered TBH.) If you hear from him directly, I apologize, but it’s extremely important to me to be a good soldier and FIT IN on my team, so I hope you understand. Looking forward to your response confirming it won’t be a problem going forward.

I have to say I was confused by your response yesterday claiming not to know anything about The Memo.
I guess this is some kind of joke? (Mike, did you put her up to this?)
I understand that having a good sense of humor is important in our company. I’ve cced Mike on this message, so he can see that HA HA, I’m the new guy, and I’ve got thick skin, but I’d really like to drop this and just move forward with work from now on.
If you guys could just include me on company/team-wide communications going forward, I’d really appreciate it.

Okay guys:
Whoever left a roll of TP on my desk with “The Memo” written on it, that was pretty funny.
But seriously. I just want to move forward with work from now on. Just add me, okay?

Roberta:
I am extremely disappointed.
This morning, I arrived at work to find that all the male members on my team were wearing pink ties EXCEPT for me. Dan immediately came up to me and said something to the effect of “Guess you didn’t get The Memo!” but was laughing at me the whole time.
It’s become VERY clear to me what is going on here.
I am being INTENTIONALLY excluded from The Memo and everyone on my team has now been made aware, and it’s some kind of joke at my expense. This has moved beyond an office prank and into something that feels malicious. It is NOT the kind of HAZING I would expect at a company with a reputation like IG’s.
I have cced Mr. Berks on this email, as I feel like I have no recourse other than to involve my direct supervisor on this matter. I would like to avoid filing an official complaint but am willing to do so if we cannot resolve this amicably.

Mr. Berks:
I know you are off-site today, but please call me at your earliest convenience.
I would like to discuss the visit I recently had with Roberta from HR, who is making herself known as one of the LEAST PROFESSIONAL people I’ve ever encountered in my career.
She and Mike just came to my desk to “apologize” for pranking me, which I at first really appreciated, but then they went on to INSIST that, even though they were playing a bit of a joke with the TP and the pink ties, there’s actually no such thing as The Memo. Yeah. You read that right.
I CANNOT BELIEVE they would waste valuable company time DOUBLING DOWN on an already VERY UNFUNNY joke. Some people watch too much The Office!
I look forward to speaking with you and apologize that I have been unable to deal with these JOKERS without involving you.

Subject: HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT – IMMEDIATE ATTENTION NEEDED
Ms. Diaz:
I am very sorry to bother you, but we have a problem up here on 7.
I know I’m a new employee, but sometimes it takes new eyes to see a serious problem. The frog that’s dropped into the pot of boiling water knows it’s hot!!!
For background on the issue at hand, please see copy of the email thread with my HR rep, my teammate Mike, and my supervisor regarding my simple request to be included on The Memo.
The only update I have to add is that, over lunch, Mr. Berks called me, as requested, and then proceeded to condescend to me about the existence of The Memo, backing up the UNnecessary and UNhumorous assertion that it doesn’t exist and never has, and belittling me in the process.
Everyone at your company seems to get The Memo, EXCEPT for me.
It has been referenced many times over my short stint here and often in Mr. Berks’ very presence! I DO NOT appreciate being treated like a CHILD or a MENTAL PATIENT.
Their collusion in a failed attempt at humor is just insulting, and frankly, COMPLETELY counter to the PROFESSIONAL image I had of Impact Global before I joined your firm. Considering their ridiculous behavior, I feel as if I’m left with no recourse other than to bring this to your attention.
As founder and president, I assume you want to be aware of the actions of your employees (Mr. Berks, Mr. Hairston, and Ms. Schuster-Minski) who seem h*llbent on ASSASSINATING the good reputation you’ve built for Impact Global through hard work.
I simply CANNOT continue to work in such an UNPROFESSIONAL environment and would like to discuss the situation with you in person.
Please be aware that my lawyer will be present. I look forward to your prompt response by COB today.
