Because this went beyond Democrat or Republican. There is no middle ground, no unbiased opinion, and zero neutral territory. You needed to pick a side. And no matter how you felt about Hillary Clinton or the Democratic establishment, this is beyond politics.
Your choice should have been clear from the beginning: Anyone But Trump.
Anyone but a lying, bigoted, women-hating racist. Anyone but the very being that emcompasses and inspires hatred upon those that are different. Anyone but the physical embodiment of male ego and hypocrisy itself. Anyone but the person who has made America into a joke on a cosmic scale. A gaffe. A mockery.
If there was ever a time to show the world that bigotry, racism, and overt “grab her by the pussy” sentiment do not define or lead America, it was on Election Day.
Despite how you feel about Hillary, she is not a racist. She is not a sexist. And no matter how much she lies, steals, or pillages, there’s still a morally critical canyon that divides these two. Hillary may be a wolf in sheep’s clothing, but Trump is the monster that ate the wolf.
How many times do I have to repeat myself? This goes beyond politics. This goes into the very moral fiber of humanity.
Like her or not, Hillary represents an ideology rooted in intellectualism and experience, with the ability to compromise, understand nuance, and acknowledge differences of opinion. Trump’s ideology is rooted in a megalomaniacal ego sprinkled with homophobia, sexism, and racism. What he represents, and what his voters represent, is something that threatens someone’s very existence.
When two deeply contradictory ideologies suddenly recognize they are inhabiting the same space, they can no longer co-exist.
And now, we have to deal with these supporters, suddenly emboldened in our daily lives, peppering us with their scathing invective and gloating in our newsfeed. Pretending this is just an ordinary election. Pretending this is just the typical transfer of power. Pretending this election invalidates what you believe, or who you are as a person.
It eats at you on a level deeper than policies ever could. This is a play for America’s soul. Under normal circumstances, you could avoid it, but to normalize this in your everyday newsfeed would be to deny your better judgment. We have to draw the line somewhere. We unfriend and unfollow. We distance ourselves from what we believe is morally wrong.
So how did this happen? How did we get here? Who exactly decided to support Trump?
We look around in confusion as Latinos are seen voting 29 percent in his favor. Can’t you see that wall is for you? Take a step back and see fear in its fullest essence. Do these voters so desperately want to be “American” that they would side with their biggest threat? That longing to be accepted by the very thing that pushes them away is an inverted Stockholm Syndrome, where there is no captor, only an evictor.
Blacks coming in at 8 percent, a number that should have been zero. Don’t you know stop and frisk is for you? Before we can break the chains of ours bodies we must break the chains of our minds. The United States has never taken black lives into consideration, and Donald Trump, who first made waves with his discriminatory housing practices, is the physical representation of that. This man is not for us. Our best interest contradicts his. Anybody who respects a man endorsed by the KKK is the exemplification of internalized self-hatred. It’s obvious we still need to emancipate those people from mental slavery.
White women coming in at a boisterous 53 percent. Pretty much sold out on sisterhood, huh? This is the saddest of all because in an odd sort of way, white women showed they will always be loyal to their oppressors. With this vote, white women demonstrated they don’t care what a man does to their body or the bodies of their sisters. Women have internalized the patriarchy in a false matrix of comfort. Their oppression has become so real and so vivid that when they hear the truth from the man himself, it’s just so much easier to vibe with the status quo. To pursue personal comfort and monetary wealth, above all else and all others. Better the devil you know, right?
White men coming in at 63 percent. This is not a surprise. We understand what this means.
What is harder to understand is how some of the more passive Trump supporters can’t see how scared everyone else is. The wrath this force takes on every race, religion, and culture that is not white, Christian, and man. That this is real fear. That Trump inspires hates—inspires actions of hate—and at any moment this bitter rage can unleash because it now, once again, has validation.
I’m scared, to be honest. I’m scared of my home.
America has always been xenophobic. It’s consistently proven that the land of free immigrants is trying to be the land free of immigrants. And racism and sexism have always been there, but just not so emboldened. Now they have a sign, a symbol, a mascot to rally around and boost motivation.
So, then terrified is a better word.
Because at the end of the day, we’re not talking about banks or taxes or property; we’re talking about people’s lives. We’re talking about the continual oppression of Ls and Bs and Ts and Qs, the continued hate towards any melanin, the continued suppression of diverse thinking and people. All in the name of Making America Great Again.
If oppressive hate and abuse is not a deal-breaker, then that’s not a friend of mine.
